Putting Style Back Into Air Travel
Aircrafts: When airlines first began flying trans-Atlantic with some regularity in the 1940s, passengers considered flying a glamorous "event," dressing in their most elegant, classy clothing to commemorate the experience.
You don't have to be an international style icon to know that clearly this is not the face of travel today. It's difficult to determine an exact date or reason, but at some point within the past two decades, traveling became an excuse for people to slip into something TOO comfortable. With the prevalence of track suits and t-shirts on airplanes today, one has to wonder if people are choosing to wear these outfits specifically for traveling, or simply refusing to get dressed in the morning! Perhaps it began with the incredibly shrinking leg room or with the stripped-down passenger amenities; or maybe it was the rise of endless security lines. Whatever the reason, travelers seem to now think that they have a free pass when it comes to travel attire, with comfort revered above all.
With the introduction of the iconic Concorde in the late 1970s, British aviation became synonymous with class and style. Today, civilized airlines pay homage to the glamorous days of travel, but still encompasses a sleek and sophisticated modern aesthetic.
I offer the following guidelines for dressing comfortably and stylishly:
Since you never know what temperature the plane or your destination city will be, layering is key. Invest in a great cashmere sweater or bring along a structured blazer. Mixing and matching on the plane with varying sleeve lengths allows travelers to extend wardrobes as well.
Simple dark denim or black or brown slacks are great for everyone. They allow travelers to move easily, always look great and can hide any pesky spots or spills from turbulence.
Just say "no" to sweats. Everyone knows a track suit is comfortable, which is why they're most appropriate for the gym.
A great pair of stylish flat shoes is preferable for travelers. Flip-flops are better left poolside.
For men, solid or striped button-down shirts look put-together and structured. Invest in the new wrinkle-free versions to ensure a sleek, clean look no matter what.
Slogan tees give other passengers an immediate first impression whether wanted or not. Stick with the basics and leave the slogans at home.
Although accessories should be kept to a minimum, sunglasses add instant glamour and cover jet-lag eyes. They're a staple.
Stick with natural fabrics which breathe easily and move with the body They will help you look (and smell!) your best upon landing and making your way out of the airport.
Following these simple guidelines will have you arriving at your destination looking chic and sophisticated. After all, you never know who you'll meet traveling, whether on the ground or in the air.
