Luxury Aircraft: Holy hybrid! The Parajet SkyCar is the world's first street-legal flying car. It has a top speed of 140 mph on the ground and a maximum flying speed of 100 mph. The SkyCar accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds and lifts off at 37 mph with take-off range of 150 meters. It has a maximum altitude of 15,000 feet and a flying range of 200 miles.
The SkyCar has the look of something taken straight from NASA's R&D area. The manufacturer claims this fantastical looking craft, which resembles a dune buggy hooked to a ram wing, will be easier and safer to fly than any other aircraft. Its engine is designed in a manner that makes it impossible for it to stall out and dive. Even if the engine should fail to operate, the craft would glide safely to the ground. Additionally, there is a deployable emergency parachute if needed.
The design team sees the vehicle more as a car that flies than an aircraft that is also an automobile. In December 2008, Parajet Automotive conducted a successful test flight of the SkyCar from London to Timbuktu. Other emerging manufacturers in the light sports aircraft market include ICON, the Pal V, and the Terrafugia Transition.
Parajet Automotive is accepting orders now for the SkyCar, with a 20-percent down payment and the balance due 100 days prior to completion. Delivery of the first SkyCar is late 2010. The price of the high-flying supercar is £50,000. For more information, visit ParaJetAutomotive.com.
