Arts & Culture: The eighth edition of America’s most prestigious art show, Art Basel Miami Beach, has proved successful yet again. The annual show was held December 3 to 6, 2009 and featured works from more than 250 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Art Basel Miami showcased the work of more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, with special sectors devoted to very recent artworks, curated exhibits, as well as performance and art in public spaces. The 2009 edition offered larger spaces for many galleries and a new, innovative floor plan designed to improve the visitor experience inside the Miami Beach Convention Center. Highlights of the show included the Art Kabinett program, which featured 28 galleries showcasing small curated exhibitions by artists such as the up-and-coming Jakub Julian Ziotkowski; Art Nova, which presented new works from more than 130 artists; and daily programs such as Art Basel Conversations, Art Perform, Art Salon, Art Video and Art Film.

This year, the list of participants – representing 33 countries worldwide – included only the finest selections of paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photography, editions, and videos. Prices ranged from just a few hundred dollars for multiples and works by young artists to several million for museum-quality masterpieces. As in years past, some of Miami’s leading private collections, such as the Margulies Collection, the Rubell Family Collection, CIFO, the de la Cruz Collection, the Mora Collection, the Scholl Collection, and the Dacra Collection were generous enough to open their homes and warehouses to eager art aficionados.

Now that the 2009 edition has come and gone, it’s never too soon to start planning for next year’s event. So, mark your calendars because the ninth edition of Art Basel Miami is set to return to the greater Miami area from December 2 to 5, 2010.
