 Auto Auctions: There really aren't many actors who could legitimately be labeled a man's man without an entourage of PR specialist diligently working 80-hour weeks to air out the dogma. However, Steve McQueen was the real deal. He was an icon before the word clicked into another definition and went cyber. Beyond the scope of his movie résumé, the man's pedigree in cool is as strong today as it was prior to his death in November 1980. Steve was a stuntman, a racecar driver, a motorcycle racer, and a pilot. Posthumously, McQueen was inducted into the Motorcyclists Hall of Fame. Steve also was a pallbearer for Bruce Lee, and Sheryl Crow even penned a song about him. It's not too bad for a guy who never marketed his own clothesline, cologne, or endorsed miracle pimple-removal cream on infomercials, huh?
When he wasn't busy making epic films like The Great Escape, Bullitt, and Le Mans, he drove a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso. It was Steve's daily driver for 10 years, a vehicle many car lovers call the most beautiful Ferrari ever built.
Christie's is auctioning this classic on August 16, 2007, at its Exceptional Motor Cars auction at the Monterey Jet Center. It is the centerpiece of the auction. The metallic chestnut brown/ beige interior, front-engine V-12 Ferrari is one of only 350 produced. Current owner Mike Regalia has spent over 4,000 hours restoring this beauty to its original 1963 luster. It is expected to draw bids from $800,000 to $1.2 million.
The vehicle may be viewed at the Rockefeller Plaza from April 26 to May 9 and again on
May 24-31. It also can be viewed in Greenwich, Conn., at the
Greenwich Concours d' Elegance from June 1-3. Christie's is having another one of its extravagant Exceptional Motor Cars auction at this event on June 3.
