Unicat builds all-purpose vehicles for private and commercial customers. The vehicles of Unicat's Amerigo line, which are made from the chassis of a Volvo FH 12 4x4, a Mercedes Benz U5000, a MAN M, and a MAN TGA, are used as RVs made by most buyers. Additionally, custom-built vehicles also can be built to order. Even the MaxiMog, the vehicle that put Unicat on the map, can be replicated by special order.

The MaxiMog, which was exhibited at the New York Museum of Modern Art, is built on the chassis of a Mercedes-Benz Unimog U90. The vehicle and its accompanying trailer are an entire "expedition system" on wheels, as the custom-crafted trailer carries a second car, a submersible vessel, a motorcycle, a jet boat, and a remote-surveillance aircraft.

The interior of the MaxiMog also is impenetrable. It can withstand a temperature as low as 70 degrees below zero and as high as 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Under optimal conditions, the vehicle can be driven up to 1,200 miles before needing to refuel. It varies as terrain and speed determine actual mileage. In 20 words or less: for every reasonably imaginable emergency situation that could occur, this vehicle offers an in-vehicle solution.

The FAQs on the MaxiMog's Web site read like a science-fiction novel. When nothing else remains on Earth, owners of MaxiMogs will exit their all-enduring vehicles, find each other and repopulate the planet. Unicats have been used as support trucks at the famous off-road endurance race the Paris-Dakar Rally. The company also manufactures vehicles for professional usage, such as rescue trucks, mobile research laboratories, tour buses, and corporate promotional vehicles.

Since new models generally receive unique customizations, it is difficult to peg a price for a spanking new one. Previously owned models listed on the firm's Web site are priced at around $500,000. Although it is difficult to put a price tag on such a purposeful automobile, I am sure a representative of Unicat would be happy to steer you in the right direction.
