Luxury Cars: Bonhams recently auctioned a Jaguar motorcar that set a new world's record for the highest priced Jaguar ever sold at auction. The proceedings were held at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester, England. A 1955 Jaguar D-Type Sports Racing Car, with the chassis number XKD509, was sold to a British buyer for more than £2.2 million.
This breaks the previous highest price set in 1999 for a Jaguar that sold for £1.706 million. The vehicle was sold on behalf of the Littlewoods Football Pools family. In 1955 the Jaguar D sold for £2,500.
The seventeenth annual sale at the Goodwood Festival of Speed drew hundreds of car enthusiasts for the six-hour event. A total of 369 lots hit the blocks with 71 percent being sold off. Total sales for the event were £6 million.
Group Director of Bonhams' Motoring Department James Knight said: "Once again the results of this magnificent sale demonstrate Bonhams" ability to source a wide selection of collectors' motor cars and automobilia and sell them in an arena which is going to attract bidders from around the world. We achieved some very strong prices for a wide spectrum of motor cars from the £133,500 for the Léon Bollée to £183,000 for Ferrari F40GTM Berlinetta."
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques.
