 Luxury Cars: The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, which first came to public view in last year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California, is now starting production at Molsheim. The production will be extremely limited to only 150 units. The carmaker, which has been known for its outstanding automotive solutions, artistic designs and driving dynamics, was faced with unique challenges with the latest Bugatti Veyron 16.4. The brand, in response to customer demand, made significant revisions to the car's sophisticated structures to create top-down driving, consequently raising this high-performing sports car to a new level. With the addition of a slew of the latest and groundbreaking safety and equipment elements, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is the fastest and most exciting roadster on the face of the earth.
It is distinguished by its slightly taller windscreen, lightweight, transparent roof in polycarbonate, and stylized daytime running lights. One of the major challenges in creating the new sports car was the removable roof since the Bugatti Veyron comes with a fixed-roof structure. Weight has been kept to the minimum through the optimized combination of rigid and lightweight engineering guaranteeing that the passenger compartment of the original model is very strong. Because the roof is an essential component of the car's total structure, the removal of it meant that the car has to be redesigned extensively to keep the car's rigidity and crash safety capabilities, and still provide extra protection from both side impacts and rollovers.
As a consequence, the car's monocoque frame was reinforced around the side skirts and the transmission tunnel. Furthermore, to prevent torsional flexing, the B-pillars have been cross-stiffened with the use of carbon fiber support, and a central carbon fiber plate has been placed under the transmission tunnel. The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport comes with carbon fiber doors and fitted with a built-in longitudinal beam. In case of a crash, this system channels energy from the A to the B-pillar, thus impact energy is dispelled. The two air vents, which have been redesigned to accommodate the 16-cylinder mid-engine, now comes with 10-centimeter wide carbon fiber components to provide protection in the event of a rollover. The interior comes with moisture-resistant, backstitched leather, a slew of new equipment which includes a reversing camera with 2.7-inch monitor inbuilt in the rear view mirror, and a sound system with digital signal processor from Puccini.
When the top is up, the car can achieve 407km/h, although with the roof down the maximum speed goes down to 360km/h. A groundbreaking soft-top roof has been included that functions much like an umbrella during rain which can be opened any time. The top speed when this roof is utilized comes down to only 130km/h.
