Great Gatsby Rolls-Royce to be Auctioned in Greenwich

Luxury Cars: On June 7 Bonhams will auction off the 1928 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Phantom I Ascot Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton with coachwork by Brewster that co-starred in the 1974 movie version of The Great Gatsby. The sale, which features several other vehicles of note, is taking place during the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance in Connecticut. The Rolls was driven by Robert Redford as the title character in the film, based on F. Scott Fitzgeralds famous 1925 novel, which co-starred Mia Farrow, Sam Waterson and Bruce Dern. It is estimated at $150,000 - $200,000.

Owned by Massachusetts collector Ted Leonard, who leant it for the film, the car is largely original with minimal restoration. It was painted a creamy yellow and its leather upholstery died green to match the description in Fitzgeralds original text: It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of wind-shields that mirrored a dozen suns. And for the real Gatsby fanatic, theres also an extremely rare first edition of the book on offer in Bonhams Fine Books and Manuscripts sale in New York on June 10, estimated at $80,000 - $120,000.
