Luxury Vehicles: The Volvo XC90 is a welcomed addition to the luxury SUV market with its versatility, three-row seating, plush interior, and sharp exterior. It is offered up in two models, the XC90 AWD V8 and the XC90 3.2. The former offers all-wheel drive and a 4.4-liter V8 engine, whereas the latter has front-wheel drive and 3.2-liter V6 engine. Both models' transmissions are six-speed adaptive automatic with a sequential gearbox, while Mannesmann Sachs' Nivomat self-leveling rear suspension is standard in the V8 and optional for the V6.
The XC90 has 10-color options with seven metallic colors. However, seven of the 10 colors do come at a premium price on both models. Roof rails and front stainless-steel skid plates are standard with both models, while color-coordinated door handles and side moldings come only on the V8-version. The rear-view mirrors are heated; the tailgate is a 70/30 split; the rear windows are tinted; and both XC90s have a tow-bar unit. The seats are ergonomically designed, and there is dual-zoned climate control. The passenger's front seat folds down flat to maximize storage space.
There are numerous optional interior and exterior features available for either model. Per Volvo's website, the V8's base price is approximately $10,000
more than the XC90 3.2. Aside from the different size of the engines, the standard interior features of the V8 versus the V6 are the most obvious difference-makers. However, the safety features of both models are identical and exemplary, which is very important when
evaluating an all-purpose SUV for a family.
