Eco-friendly Luxury: As going green becomes the latest trend to get in on, the United Kingdom-based design firm, DIYKyoto has launched a new version of its must-have green gadget, Wattson.
Wattson is a tiny wireless unit you plug into your computer's USB port to monitor your home's electricity use. The modern looking piece of equipment works with "Holmes" software on your computer and transmits your energy data to a community of other Wattson users on the Web so you can see how you measure up.
The company claims users can save anywhere between 5 to 20 percent on their annual electricity bills, which offsets the price of the monitoring system that costs £100 ($185) and £350 ($647) for a sleeker Wattson Limited Edition with bamboo trim. They also say it only costs about £4 a year to run and uses minimal energy.
The award-winning system is easy on the eyes and helps monitor electricity use anywhere in your home at any given time. It is easy to use and the company hopes that it will become a tool for greenies to share even more info about how they are saving energy and money.
The device works like a mood ring, changing colors depending on consumption. It glows blue when you energy use is below normal, red when you're sucking down more electricity than usual, and purple for average consumption. The device is not only meant to be environmentally friendly, it is also manufactured with the environment in mind, using recycled packaging materials and uses materials that are easily taken apart and recycled.
If you're interested in saving electricity, the Wattson and Holmes system is a great luxury item to start with.
