Apple is offering downloadable podcasts from major universities for free in its iTune store under the classification of iTunes U. The programs offered are bona fide college classes taught by accredited professors. Downloads have risen substantially since Apple began featuring these lessons on the iTunes home page. A few of the video professors have become educational celebrities. One lecturer has actually cracked the Top 20 of iTunes.
Major universities and colleges such as Duke, Yale, Stanford, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania have their own iTunes U sites that are dedicated to educational matters. Although the subject matter comes directly from the institution of higher learning, college credits cannot be earned through iTunes U.
