Known for helping launch Napa as a world-renowned hot-spot for vineyards, the late Mondavi always appreciated good food, art, and a nice bottle of wine, which is why popular furniture maker Frank Pollaro decided to design a one-of-a-kind Centenary Table to honor the "father of the American fine wine industry."
"This project is very dear to me as one of my first memories in wine education started with a bottle of Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve," says Frank Pollaro.
The model of a five dining room table series, the Centenary Table is a limited edition piece designed for the Napa Valley estate's Vineyard Room as a way to pay homage to the winemaker. Pollaro used his knowledge of woodworking to craft the Centenary, bringing in four "wide-plank figure aged Northern California Claro walnut" boards as the main building material — which apparently ages gracefully and shows unique character over time.
Able to comfortably seat eight people, the table features 100 round inlays around the edging, symbolizing the 100 years since Mondavi's birth. Each inlay has the diameter of a wine cork and are made of persimmon wood, a favorite fruit of Mondavi which is grown at the winery. The table's base is segmented into six sides, meant to represent the six main grape varietals grown in the To Kalon Vineyard at Mondavi's winery: Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The six sides are accented with hand carved words (Food, Wine, Art, Family, Friends, and Passion) that the winemaker held dear. Of course, the entire table has been treated to repel liquids, including wine.
"After touring the vineyards, studying all aspects of the mission-style winery and memorable conversations with Margrit Mondavi, Robert's wife, I quickly learned that despite being a great Napa Valley pioneer, Robert Mondavi was a simple man, " says Pollaro. "It was important for me to echo this simplicity in the Centenery Table and create a design which would match the aesthetic of Robert's home."
The starting price for the five limited edition tables will begin at $75,000.
