New York-based Michael Robbins started his self-titled woodworking studio in 2011, using his photography and artistic background as a tool to inform his unique perspective on furniture. As a peek into his creative process, the above video takes you through his method—which doesn’t include sketching out ideas prior to breaking the wood out. Robbins explains that he keeps a picture in his mind as he’s creating a piece, allowing that picture to warp and evolve as the materials lead him into unexpected directions. All of his furniture designs carry a very strong rustic presence, with legs whittled to a sharpened end and wood braces seemingly fitting together organically. Of the designs showcased in the video, we especially love the Taza Lounge chair and the Bone Barstool.
