They say money can’t buy happiness, but one thing is for sure, it certainly can build an amazing new custom home. Architects are entertaining many wild ideas these days, from cutting-edge technology to impressive features that look like they belong in luxury resorts. Some homes even include incredible extras such as private elevators equipped to transport rare automobiles. Whether you're actually looking to make an upgrade to your home or you just want to see the latest trends out there, here is a list of the top luxury home design trends that seem to be here for good.

Main Home

It should come as no surprise that an open concept floor plan is a hot commodity nowadays, but some luxury home builders are seeing more requests for open spaces that can also accommodate semi-closed off features—such as grand entrances and mudrooms that include radiant floor heating and plenty of built-in storage.

Another trend for the main home is smart technology. New luxury homes are getting prepped for a dizzying array of smart devices to control just about everything in the home. For example, when homeowners are away, they can still control locks, view security footage, adjust the lighting and temperature, and even get the sauna heated up from their smartphones.

Kitchen

New buyers want all of the latest gadgetry and accessories in their kitchens. Some of the top trends include:

  • - Radiant floor heating; often with porcelain, ceramic or stone tile
  • - Restaurant quality appliances
  • - Large walk-in pantries
  • - Wine fridges
  • - Built-in water filters that dispense carbonated water from the faucet
  • - Smart appliances with features such as the ability to control the temperature of the refrigerator or get alerts if you left the stove on
  • - Hidden backsplashes that hide under the countertop, but come up when needed for display and to use tools and appliances

Bathroom

People want to feel like they're in a five-star luxury resort at all times, and the bathroom is a very important part of that. One of the most popular materials found in bathrooms now is marble, which is an expensive material that just screams elegance and luxury. Technology is also big in the bathroom and some of those trends include:

  • - Radiant floor heating so bare feet are comforted with a warm surface
  • - Towel warmers
  • - Huge soaker tubs where homeowners can relax after a stressful day
  • - Smart glass shower enclosures, which look like clear glass when not in use (in order to display the magnificent tile work), but turn opaque when in use to give the user more privacy
  • - Bathroom mirrors that turn into LCD televisions or Internet access screens with the touch of a button

Extra Rooms

Luxury houses usually have a lot of square footage, so in addition to the basics (like massive kitchens, multiple living rooms, countless bedrooms and grand master suites), buyers want extra rooms devoted to their favorite hobbies. Some of the biggest trends in extra rooms include:

  • Wine Rooms: Wine rooms are one of the most popular requests made these days. While some buyers are satisfied with a wine rack or fridge, others take their love of vino to a new level by creating rooms dedicated specifically to storing their prized collections. These rooms include space to keep hundreds (or even thousands) of bottles and the latest in climate control technology keeps the wine chilled to the perfect temperature.
  • Home Gyms: Why pay for a membership when you can have your own private gym inside your own home? Those who are dedicated to fitness and a healthy lifestyle are building fitness centers inside their custom homes, equipping them with the latest in equipment and technology. Some even include extra features for post-workout relaxation, like saunas and indoor swimming pools.
  • Private Movie Theaters: Another popular request is for architects to create the ideal private movie theater. These rooms are equipped with the ultimate in sound and lighting technology, and boast far more comfortable seats than you’ll find at your local theater. Once you have that, you should look into something like PRIMA Cinema, which allows you to watch new releases the same day they hit your local theater.
