 Luxury Watches: An exceptionally fine and rare 18K rose gold perpetual calendar chronograph Patek Philippe wristwatch with moon phases and baton numerals from 1960 is expected to fetch a record price at Christies Important Watches sale in Geneva on May 11. Estimated at $880,000 - $1.3 million, the Patek on offer embodies several elements which make it one of the worlds most valuable timepieces: made by one of the world's most dignified watchmakers, a highly coveted version of Pateks famous reference 2499 (second series), it was originally retailed by the distinguished house of Gobbi in Milan.
This particular watch has never before been offered at auction. The rarity of the timepiece is further enhanced by the fact that only seven examples of second series references 2499 - widely acknowledged to be one of the world's greatest watch models ever created - in pink gold are known to have appeared in public to date. As Christies notes, the 2499 has undoubtedly significantly influenced the designs of many of the most renowned watchmakers. Introduced to the market in 1950, it replaced the legendary reference 1518, the world's first perpetual calendar wristwatch with chronograph made in series.
