Luxury Gold Bicycle: Aurumania has a limited-edition bicycle that is touting as the world's most expensive bicycle. With a price tag of €80,000, or around $108,000, the Gold Bike Crystal Edition model of the CPH Street collection is a contender. The sparkly six-figure two-wheeler is hand built and gold plated in 24k gold. It also contains 600 Swarovski crystals, a chocolate-brown Brooks leather saddle seat and matching hand-sewn grips. Each one comes with a leather badge of authenticity. The front-mounted badge has an embossed gold leaf. The bicycle is not entirely gold plated. The front and rear wheel hubs, spokes, and sprocket as well as the handlebars and seat holder are hand-polished aluminum.
Aurumania, whose name is derived from aurum, the Latin word for gold, is selling 10 of these fully loaded Gold Bike CE. However, if you are interested in something a tad less flashy, Gold Bikes sans Swarovski crystals also are available at about $28,000. Additionally, there is a Night Bike, which is not gold plated, that sells for approximately, $2,700. The prices on the company's Web site are listed in euros.
According to a company-issued press release, the Gold Bike Crystal Edition was first introduced in September 2008 and its first sale went to buyers who turned the bike into a unique piece of artwork by having it hung on a wall in their residence. Aurumania designed a special gold-platted wall mount to accommodate their wishes. It was not specified whether the buyers, who preferred to remain anonymous, were cycling enthusiasts or collectors of eclectic collectibles.
