Luxury Cars: After seven years of experimentation, the wait is over
and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 has busted out of the lab
and on to the streets. This is the fastest and the
most powerful production car ever assembled. Faster
than you can say Mr. Ettore Bugatti, the 2006 Bugatti
Veyron 16.4 is going 60 mph plus. It goes from zero
to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and accelerates at over 120
mph in less than eight seconds! And if you got a
minute, it tops out at over 250 mph in 56 seconds. If
you buy one on May 13, you could drive directly off
the showroom to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and
try to qualify for the pole position of this year's
Indy 500. However, do keep in mind that the rookie
orientation program begins May 7, and the actual race
day is May 28.
The 4,200-pound coupe has a seven-gear manual drive or
a Formula 1 gearbox, fully automatic dual-clutch
transmission that powers its 1,001-horsepower,
16-cylinder, 8-liter engine. And it can be driven
either at famous racetracks or in everyday
traffic-just like any other roadster that costs $1.1
million. A total of 300 Veyron 16.4 is being produced
in Molsheim, France, for 2006. Since Volkswagen
acquired the Bugatti brand name approximately five
years ago, the Veyron 16.4 is definitely the most
powerful "Bug" in the world.
The vehicle made its U.S. debut at the L.A. Auto Show
in January and will be shown at the Geneva Motorshow
Show from February 28 to March 12.
