Luxury Autos: Crossover is a term generally utilized in music circles when an artist's music appeals to music lovers in more than one niche. But the term perfectly meshes into vehicle vernacular when describing Mercedes-Benz's CLS 500. There is no identity crisis to overcome here, as the CLS 500 seamlessly combines the best of both luxury and performance vehicles to appeal to drivers who are either left or- right-brain thinkers.

Astonishing performance, elegant styling and sumptuous interior are earmarks of this Mercedes-Benz. The transmission is a seven-speed, electronically controlled, manually interactive adaptive automatic overdrive with touch shift. It shifts as smooth as a straw being pulled through a thick milkshake. It is powered by a 5.0-liter V8, 24-valve engine with 302 horsepower. The adaptive variable suspension with front and rear automatic load leveling ensures a velvety ride over any terrain. Taking a page from emotionally charged Italian designs, the CLS 500 captures a Mediterranean spirit with its sleek, contoured exterior, which is delineated by its flashy 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior features superior hand-finished matte-burl walnut trim on the center-floor console and instrument panel. The seats are plush, supple leather. Front seats adjust 10 ways, while the rear bucket seats have power-adjustable headrests and a fold-down center armrest.

The CLS 500 is the well-bred hybrid, being a four-door vehicle with the functionality of a two-door sports coupe. Its arousing and logical magnetism are a dead-center cerebral fit for drivers who sway to the left or to the right.
