On Track with the Caterham Seven CSR

Luxury Cars: Since 1957, Caterham, a UK-based specialty carmaker, has produced automobiles that embody the spirit of racing from performance to looks to attitude. Its most recent release, the all-alloy, four-cylinder twin cam Caterham Seven CSR, is no exception. The most distinguishable feature of this model is that it is more accommodating to taller drivers than previous Caterhams. It is powered by a new Cosworth-developed 2.3-liter Ford Duatec engine, which allows the CSR to go from zero to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph. The brakes and suspension are upgraded too. The suspension system improves torsion stiffness 25 percent.

Major improvements in the car's aerodynamics have been accomplished, as the cycle wings are mounted closer to the tires to reduce drag. Front-end lift is reduced by 50 percent with a larger nose cone combined with a floor-mounted chin. This substantially reduces the under-steering that is caused by driving at high speeds.

The interior is fully carpeted and has silver dials, fresh-air vents, and a bespoke steering wheel. There is even more storage area in the console and armrest areas. The anthracite wheels and tires are 15 inches, and the width of the tires is 10 inches. Green, red, black or yellow are the colors offered for the all-aluminum body. A five- or six-speed gearbox is optional.

To ensure safety throughout, all Caterhams have aluminum honeycomb side-impact protection and protection from rollovers. The vehicles are sold in kits but can be assembled by either dealers or owners. Historically, these vehicles have excellent resale value. Dealers can be located at Caterham's website.
