2017 Ford GT Surprises at the Detroit Auto Show

In a move that surprised everyone at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last week, Ford recently unveiled their 2017 GT supercar (check out the design process in the above video). The folks at Ford have said it will feature one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any car in production so far, which—with models like the Lamborghini Huracan and the McLaren 650S—is a pretty major statement.

The new two-door coupe GT features an aluminum and carbon fiber body, and a mid-mounted 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo engine that will apparently give over 600hp. “Anchored by a carbon fiber passenger cell, the GT features aluminum front and rear subframes encapsulated in structural carbon fiber body panels," says Ford. Plus, with help from its tear-drop shape and curved windshield, the car has been designed to limit drag and enhance downforce.

The interior isn't too shabby either, with two cockpit seats that are integrated straight into the car's carbon fiber cell, an F1-style steering wheel, and a digital and configurable infotainment system.

The 2017 GT will begin production late next year and is among 12 new autos, including the F-150 Raptor and the Focus RS, that Ford plans on releasing by 2020. While pricing information has yet to be announced, we think it's safe to assume it will be in line with some of our favorite luxury automakers.
