Which Billionaires Will Lose Their Spots on List of World's Largest Yachts in 2013?

Project Azzam
By: Jared Paul Sterncomments 0 | 2013

The world’s largest yacht, said to have been commissioned by the Saudi Royal Family, will be among nine new vessels launching in 2013 that qualify for a spot among the world’s 100 biggest yachts, displacing several billionaires currently in prime position. Project Azzam, a top secret 590-ft. yacht currently under construction at German shipyard Lurssen will be completed sometime in the next nine months, according to Superyachts.com’s new 2013 Top 100 forecast. The yacht, which is likely to cost around $750 million, will be about 54 ft. longer than Roman Abramovich’s Eclipse, currently the world’s biggest, which will drop to the no. 2 spot. The next landmark launching will be Swift, a 443 ft. yacht from Abu Dhabi MAR which will be among the 10 largest yachts in the world when finished and will bump Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen’s 413-ft. Octopus down to the no. 14 spot on the list.

Following that in terms of size will be a 413-ft. craft called Privilege One from Italy’s Privilege Yachts, and a 325 ft. vessel from the Netherlands’ Feadship de Vries yard, which built Oracle mogul Larry Ellison’s 289-ft. Musashi in 2010. The new Feadship launch will top the shipyard’s recently completed Venus, the 260-ft. Philippe Starck-designed yacht commissioned by the late Steve Jobs. Meanwhile Dutch shipyard Oceanco has a 300-ft. vessel codenamed Y709 planned for launch later this year which will bump Ellison’s craft down, while Germany’s Blohm + Voss, which built the Eclipse for Abramovich, is working on a 269-ft. yacht for an unnamed client. David Geffen, Steven Spielberg and Ron Perelman will all be big losers in the largest yacht race as well, bumped down on the list due to the new launchings.

90 Meter Superyacht Takes to the Clouds

The Monaco Yacht Show saw some pretty fantastic vessels but the new 90 meter superyacht for Benetti by Marco Casali of Too Design definitely stood out. As part of the company's Innovation Project, the Cloud 90 is the biggest out of the three designs the company came up with, according to Super Yacht Times. The look was apparently driven forth by the idea to create a cloud above the hull and keep it in place with a fashion plate. Whether or not the cloud concept really comes across, the vessel is still pretty impressive with its open plan that looks a little like an aircraft carrier. It has two swimming pools and plenty of entertainment areas, as well as panoramic views and large terraces. If two pools aren't enough, the garage area of the boat can be made into a third, with sea water to swim in. The whole design concept seems pretty modern and sleek, with plenty of open spaces to relax or party in.
