San Diego Yachtfest a Success

Yacht News: San Diego Yachtfest 2007 proved to be a success as it returned to Shelter Island for its eighth consecutive year earlier this month. With countless yachts and megayachts to pine over and the latest fashions to gawk over, Friday afternoon felt quite a turnout.

Making my way down the red carpeted docks I was nearly blinded by a sea of white as the beautifully appointed yachts glistened in the San Diego sun. An esteemed array of yachtbuilders, brokers, fractional ownership providers, commercial maintenance groups and industry insiders were on hand to answer any questions patrons might have.

In attendance were some of the industry's best ready to showcase their finest seafaring vessels. While some yachts provided mere viewing pleasure, others were listed for sale and came equipped with personal brokers ready to crunch numbers. I must admit, it can be awfully tempting when a broker tells you he can get you into a multi-million dollar yacht by the end of the day. Participating yachtbuilders included Ocean Alexander, Sunseeker, Fraser Yachts, and more.

Throngs of spectators, shaded by designer parasols and decorated hats, nibbled on hors d'oeuvres and sipped Chardonnay as they eagerly awaited the "All Decked Out Fashion Show," presented by Saks Fifth Avenue. Hosted by former San Diego Charger Vaughn Parker and Kimberly Biehl of Saks Fifth Avenue, the fashion show featured the latest trends of the season. Keeping with the event's nautical theme, models were escorted down the docks by members of the armed forces?a striking contrast of fashion at its finest. The fashion show ended on a high note when the U.S. Coast Guard was presented with "Greetings from California" care packages, which will be provided to San Diego troops overseas. Proceeds from the event benefited the San Diego Armed Services YMCA.

From stopping to take off your shoes to board one of the luxury yachts to perusing the vendors' packets of paraphernalia, San Diego Yachtfest 2007 was everything it promised to be.
