Fodder for Chartering the Caribbean!

March 18, 2008

Yacht Charters: So, you have decided to charter a yacht and cruise the Caribbean. Congratulations, the first step toward experiencing a getaway like no other has been taken. You have total control over where to go, where to stop, what to do and for how long to do it for an entire vacation. Wake up every morning to new scenery and be pampered by a crew that includes a top-notch chef. This is freedom at its tropical finest, as the day's itinerary and your desires are always in sync. Whether you are idly passing time on the sundeck, scuba diving off aft deck, swimming with dolphins, or bopping around the islands on the dinghy, there is no time like island time.

The Caribbean islands are scenic, diverse, and an oasis for lovers of various activities that range from highly adventurous to barely moving a muscle except to properly affix the lip to the glass before sipping a drink. It also is a multicultural affair with African, American, British, Dutch, French, and Spanish influences.

Here are a few tips and suggestions on getting around we gathered that you might want to pack along with the sunglasses, the sun block, the sandals, and the swimming trunks.

Select a Reputable Broker
First, let's begin with what is most important. It should go without saying but do be careful to charter a yacht from a reputable firm.

Tim Nelson of Seven Seas Yacht Charters, a firm that specializes in 100-foot yachts worldwide, conveyed, "All charter brokers can book charters on any yacht available. Nobody really has any "exclusives," and the pricing is the same no matter which one you choose. However, you want to make sure the broker has experience working with the kind of yacht you are looking to charter."

A charter company is going to ensure that a client is capable of paying. So, it makes sense that customers make sure they are to get their money's worth too. Most reputable brokers belong to boating associations. Members of these are required to abide by a code of ethics to protect the public against fraud, misrepresentation or unethical practices. Examples of such associations include the Florida Yacht Brokers Association, the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association, the Charter Yacht Brokers Association, and the California Yacht Charter Brokers Association.

Let's move on to some fun stuff!

Golf on the Islands
Just because you are staying on a boat does not mean playing a few rounds of golf is out of the question. Although some islands do not have any golf courses, or much else, there are plenty of places to play. Bring your clubs if you must, however, most courses do have equipment for rent.

In Anguilla, the Temenos Golf Club in Anguilla is a 7,100-yard example of how well nature and man can work together. The 18-hole Greg Norman-designed course is as engaging as it is challenging. Road Bay is the port of entry. The Sandy Resort in St. James, Barbados has two 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course. Tom Fazio designed the Green Monkey course. The par-72 course played host to the 2006 World Cup. The small greens and tight fairways on the Old Nine course make it interesting for players of all levels. Although Nevis Island is not as popular with vacationers as its sister island St. Kitts, Nevis has one of the best golf courses in the West Indies at the Four Seasons Resort. The 18-hole par-71 course, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones II, is open to the public at slightly higher green fees than for guests. There is an 18-hole championship golf course at the Mullet Bay Resort on Dutch Sint Maarten, surrounded by water and palm trees. The golf course is located between the Simpson Bay Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Slip into the Jolly Harbour Marina and head for the par-71, 18-hole Jolly Harbour Golf Club.

Gettin' Wet & More!
The British Virgin Islands are among the best areas for sailing, snorkeling and diving. There are more than 60 charted dive sites throughout the BVI. Buttonwood Bay, which is located on the western end of great Harbour, St. Peter, has snorkeling spots about 20 yards offshore. The area is secluded and overnight anchorage is available. Cooper Island is approximately 1.5 miles long by one-half mile wide. It is about five miles south of Tortola, the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. Manchioneel Bay, which is a good overnight anchorage, is on the northwest shore of Cooper Island. Boats can be anchored overnight at the Cooper Island Beach Club. It is as primitive as can be with no roads or cars, no nightclubs or casinos, and no

LuxéProfile: The Don of Thunderboat Row

February 28, 2008

Offshore Racing Heroes: As a powerboat racer, Don Aronow was a two-time world champion who in his time set 16 speed records. As a designer, he was a bona fide god of the sea whose boats won more than 300 offshore races. Aronow's boats were among the most sought-after status symbols of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Prestigious owners included Malcolm Forbes, the shah of Iran, and then-director of CIA George Bush. Unfortunately, many of the richest drug dealers of the world also owned Cigarettes, because it was very difficult to catch or monitor. Subsequently, the civic-minded Aronow designed a 39-foot catamaran patrol boat, the Blue Thunder, for the U.S. Custom Services.

Cigarette Phenomena
Once you sliced through choppy ocean waters in a Cigarette, you were hooked forever! Aronow and his 32-foot powerboat transformed an extreme sport with a meager following into an industry! This smoking boat, aptly named the Cigarette, was so highly regarded in its heyday that the word "cigarette" became the generic term for narrow-body powerboats.

When the first Cigarette powerboat splashed down and parted the waters, it was en route to making history in offshore racing circles. In 1969, Mr. Aronow, the designer and first racer of the Cigarette Racing Team, won an offshore race that stretched from Long Beach, Calif., to Ensenada, Mexico, with it in its first outing. Although the boat was labeled "Cigarette," the first one was actually a Cary -from Magnum Marine - another Aronow formed venture. The following year he retired from racing and officially formed the Cigarette Racing Team to build deep-V-hull vessels, beginning with the Standard 28 fishing model. Many viewed the 35 Cigarette as the finest of its era.

Making of Thunder Row
When offshore racing began in the early 1960s, many of the drivers also owned companies that designed powerboats. Aronow came to Miami in the early 1960s after amassing a fortune the previous decade in New Jersey's burgeoning construction industry. His modest plan to chase a dream of racing and designing boats resulted in the formation of several epic boat-building companies. Aronow-formed companies include Formula Marine, Donzi Marine, Magnum Marine, the USA Racing Team and the Cigarette Racing Team. Each one headquartered at the dead end of 188th Street in Miami-which was known as "Thunderboat Row."

Tragic End
Lifestyles out of the water for many participants of offshore racing were equally adventurous. Ironically, the famous dead-end street where it all began is also where it ended. On the early evening of February 3, 1987, Mr. Aronow was shot and killed in his car shortly after leaving a business meeting with-as it turned out- one of the men convicted for the crime. Ben Kramer, a reputed drug runner who was under investigation by the federal government, had bought the USA Racing Team from Aronow. However, he had to sell it back due to legal complications involving the U.S. Custom Services. Kramer is serving a life sentence without parole. It was a tragic ending to an extraordinary and exciting life.

Legacy
Aronow is an esteemed member of all halls of fames honoring offshore racing and powerboat design. Several of the companies originated on Thunderboat Row continue to thrive and produce boats inspired by the designs and accomplishments of the legendary Don Aronow.

Trends in the Powerboat Industry: Bigger, Faster, Better!

February 28, 2008   |   Contributor: Marilyn DeMartini

Powerboats: Luxury boating used to be "yachting" but in today's recreational boating world, the trend is bigger, faster, and better powerboats and power packages. Forty-plus foot custom-built powerboats with high-speed engines are geared toward customers with the need for speed, who will not sacrifice luxury for performance. For $750,000 to $1 million-plus, a boater who wants to have it all, can.

In the 1960s and 70s -- powerboating's "hayday" -- when America caught the go-fast frenzy, 50 mph was fast. In long-distance, rough water offshore races, from Miami to Nassau or Los Angeles to San Francisco, rugged men bore the brunt of the sea without safety equipment, seats or high-tech electronics. Now, 100 mph is easily achievable -- if you have the budget or lack of one -- and fun is the goal, not glory or trophies. Seats are plush leather with electric and hydraulic adjustments. Engines and gauges are computer-synchronized to provide diagnostic tools. Navigation is managed by GPS, so your navigator or riding mechanic is now on your dashboard instead of in the co-pilot seat!

New super-charged, high-horsepower engines make big boats easier to handle so moving up from a smaller, less powerful boat to a top-of-the-line, top-speed performance boat becomes an attainable luxury for recreational boaters--not just racers. Cruising at 80 mph can feel boring when your friends zip by at triple digits. Call it "power envy."

But speed is only part of the equation, as stunning good looks are also high on the priority scale. Today's powerboater likes to "wear" his beautiful acquisition proudly and customization is his fashion statement. The boat's model, elaborate paint scheme, cockpit and cabin decor, entertainment system and other accoutrements speak to the fine style and economic "wherewithal" (or wear-with-all) of the owner--just like his designer suit, custom motorcycle or sports car.

This is not your father's powerboat. Forget the stereo type of a middle-aged man with a big belly, gold chains, and a young, bodacious woman on his arm. The new powerboat customer is a youthful entrepreneur who enjoys boating with friends and family -- they are more a product of the Baby Boom or Generation X than of mid-life crisis and simply love life in the fast lane.

Bigger, faster better has created a new meaning for "sport yacht" and the custom-built performance boat market is skyrocketing. Once you've hit 100 mph, there's no going back to 50!

Ferretti: New Boats Afloat

February 25, 2008

Get ready! Here comes Ferretti!

Yachts: The Ferretti Group recently unveiled four new yachts-the Riva 63 Vertigo, the Custom Line 97, the CRN, and the Bertram 700 Enclosed-at the 2008 Miami International Boat Show. The Bertram 700 E, which is the line's second ship to launch, sails in with momentum from the tailwinds of the Bertram 700 Open. The Riva 63 Vertigo sets sail with twin MAN V-12s that generate a cruising speed of 35 knots and a maximum 40 knots at one-third displacement. While the performance is superb, the interior is spacious and rich with exotic-wood accents and metal trim throughout. It is a Riva from top to bottom.

The CRN 43 is the longest model made on the Composite line, whereas CRN's Steel line is reserved for mega vessels stretching out to 80 meters. The 43's spacious saloon and dining areas are elegant and provide plenty of room for entertaining. It can accommodate 10 guests and nine crew members.

Although the Custom Line 97 is outrageously chic yet, it was actually designed to maximize available interior space on its upper, main, and lower decks. The CL 97 is the result of the second collaboration between the Studio Zuccon International Project and the CRN Engineering division of Ferretti. The partnership was formed with the launching of the CL 94. The Custom Line 112 will be the group's third release.

The sleek lines and ultra-lavish interior position the Bertram 700 E in a slip all its own. The enclosed flybridge has a fully equipped helm station, varnished wood paneling, a full wet bar and a DVD-equipped entertainment center. The windows on the port and the starboard sides were made to handle the rigor of offshore sports fishing. Bertram is the Ferretti's group only brand in the USA.

More on Ferretti Yachts

The Ferretti Group has a portfolio of some of the most exclusive brands in the nautical world with Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Apreamare, Mochi Craft, Custom Line, and CRN. The firm has three representative offices in Europe, the USA, and Asia.

Sailing's Smooth with Seven Seas Yacht Charters

January 18, 2008

Yacht Charters: Seven Seas Yacht Charters easily lives up to the built-in proclamation of its nomenclature. The seaworthy firm offers yacht excursions worldwide in mono-hull sailboats, powered catamarans or motor yachts that lavishly accommodate as few as two or ten or more guests. SSYC obtains appropriate vessels for trips involving any of the seven seas for seven-, 14-, or 21-day charters. Itineraries are available that touch the Arctic, Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Four cruises throughout the Bahamas are available, while nine are offered through the Caribbean Islands. Other destinations include Greece, Turkey, the East and West Mediterranean seas, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Chartering services range from full-crew or captain-only to bareboat plans. The organization, with its 19-plus years of know-how, is firmly established in the yacht-chartering industry. Luxury mega-yachts, such as the Alexander and the Turama, both approximately 400 feet long, can house 50 to 60 guests. Both can be chartered for Mediterranean cruises. The SeaDream, with its 55 cabins, has room for up to 110 guests and is available for Mediterranean and Caribbean adventures. However, these luxury vessels are just a few examples of the firm's abundant offerings. Once clients specify their wants and needs, Seven Seas then steers clients through the course of actions necessary to escalate desires to actual booked charters.

Years ago the company's maiden voyage into luxury yacht chartering began as Virgin Island Sailing and Virgin Island Yachts. Both are direct affiliates of SSYC. Virgin Island Sailing specializes in crewed charters, while Virgin Island Yachts' specialty is bareboat charters. Bareboat charters do offer the most independence and exhilaration, but there is an accompanying level of onboard competence that must be displayed by two passengers to facilitate such arrangements. For smooth sailing on rates, availability of yachts and destinations, visit the informative website of Seven Seas Yacht Charters.

Inter Yacht Charter Knows Its Purpose

December 24, 2007

Luxury Yacht Charters: Perhaps the most significant teleological question ever asked was raised in 1907 by John R. Illingworth when he queried, "What is the true purpose of life's voyage?" It is likely that there are as many responses as there are citizens of Earth. It is not exactly the type of question where responses can be summarily categorized and reduced to a few choices like a market research survey. With zero regard to commensurable corollary topics, this question is not quite as complex. What is the true purpose of travelers who book a chartered-yacht voyage? Inter Yacht Charter believes that the true purpose of travelers seeking such an endeavor is to have an experience they will forever remember pleasantly and want to do repeat it. With IYC's breadth of over 130 charter offerings, it is possible for nautical-adventure lovers to recapture that sensation with a different destination again and again and again.

Inter Yacht Charter has over 1,300 yachts, ranging from 38 feet to over 400 feet. The firm's goal is to provide the largest accessible network of yacht charters available. Inter Yacht Charter can accommodate bareboat, crewed, luxury, or corporate yacht charters proficiently. From catamarans to mega yachts to three-day getaways to global-spanning extravaganzas, IYC handles every detail of clienteles' journeys meticulously. It is all about being an exemplary service provider. Whether it is a question on sailing or the mores of a country or its people, all of the personnel affiliated with IYC are deftly experienced at doing their job and happy to help.

The company's website has a very informative FAQ section that offers extensive information on how to prepare for such a vacation. Another very impressive feature of Inter Yacht Charter's Web site is the world map, which depicts all the destinations available for charters. Plain and simple, IYC knows its purpose and delivers splendidly.
