Overview

The love of wooden boats is more than just a nostalgic one. Not only is there a fascination with this natural material, but there are also many technical merits.

Solid mahogany is used throughout for the hull construction, included are the keel, chine, ribs, sheer line and stringers. A multilayered mahogany marine plywood is attached to the outside of this strong internal frame. To add extra strength to the hull and transom a sheet of Kevlar is embedded between the two layers of marine plywood. The result is a strong, watertight, twist free hull, which compared to fiberglass offers a 35% more strength and rigidity. Because of the extreme curvatures in the shape of the transom with its built in steps, an exacting construction is called for. By cold molding the three layers of solid mahogany, equal strength to plywood is achieved.

The inflexibility of the construction of the Sea Sonic allows an application of a very hard finish. All in all there are fourteen layers. Ten coats of epoxy are applied and four coats of a polyurethane containing a UV protectant are sprayed. The natural beauty of the wood shines through with its deep shine and transparency. This tough, durable exterior guarantees a watertight weather and saltwater resistant finish which is virtually maintenance free. A quick wash with soapy water is all that is needed to keep the Sea Sonic looking ship shape.

Traditional wooden boats are built using solid wood planks which tend to shrink and expand. This causes open joints and cracks which causes leaks and damage to the finish. Planked wooden boats need ongoing maintenance and refinishing. This does not apply to Sea Sonic boats because of the improved technical advances in modern boat building.

The deck of the Sea Sonic is an example of the precise Swiss craftsmanship found throughout the boat. Canadian maple is artistically inlaid on the fore and aft deck. Shining chrome hardware like the flagpoles, air intakes and retractable cleats are both practical and stylish.
