The exhibition Oceanic Works features around 70 artworks, from hand-carved sculptures representing ancestors and gods to jewellery, weapons and cooking tools. This exhibition celebrates ancient Oceanic traditions from Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Free-standing figures display a marvelous mastery of wood carving. One 19th-century figure from Papua New Guinea -- more specifically in the area known as New Ireland -- stands nearly 4 feet tall and has a mask-like face with a seemingly sad expression. Its legs are square and powerful looking; the hands are fused into bands of patterned color. Pointed breasts suggest the figure is female; atop its head is a kind of pointed helmet or hat. By contrast, another striking 19th-century wood figure, this one from the Solomon Islands, is small, only 13-½ inches in height. It is impressively naturalistic, representing a woman with armbands and bracelets, displaying a dark patina.
