The International African Arts Festival at Commodore Barry Park is a four-day event with dance performances, music and spoken-word programmes. It features more than 200 art and crafts stalls displaying work by local, national and international artists.
Past performers here have included Lauryn Hill and hip-hop ensemble KRS-1 and the event now draws over 75,000 attendees each year. The 2009 Festival is dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the founding of The East, the institution that gave birth to the African Street Festival, now known as IAAF. The IAAF's African Marketplace features over 100 micro enterprise merchants vending handmade crafts, internationally traded goods, fine arts, fashion & food from across the Diaspora. Visit the marketplace for those rare gifts and difficult to find staples that festival goers have come to love throughout the years.
