The Winter Festival at Newbury Racecourse features the Hennessy Gold Cup, the most important of the pre-Christmas steeplechases. A classic of the racing calendar, it was first run in 1957. Today it's the jewel in Newbury's crown.
It attracts the country's best steeplechasers and has been won by such greats as Mill House, Arkle and Denman. For jockeys, trainers and race goers alike it is traditionally thought to be one of the finest of race meets.
The Hennessy Gold Cup itself is on the Saturday. It was always a favourite of the Queen Mother, who often presented the trophy; a task now taken by Lady Gabriella Windsor. As Britain's oldest sponsored race, celebrating 50 years in 2009, the Hennessy Gold Cup continues to attract celebrity race goers.
