Everglades National Park, on the sunny tip of South Florida, is a welcome respite for those interested in something more than just the beach. The park boasts a lodge and three campsites, ranger-led activities and a Visitors' Centre.
The flat wetlands that make up the Everglades National Park make it one of the more interesting National Parks in the country in both climate and surroundings. Technically, the area is a 50-mile-wide freshwater river which ranges in depth as it slowly creeps toward the ocean.
Hiking and biking are two ways to get around, but to get up close and truly immerse yourself in the environment, paddling is recommended. This takes time, and if you have less of that than you'd like, taking a motor-boat can be just as interesting. There are canoe trails as well.
The area is host to a variety of animals rarely seen elsewhere, including the manatee and the Florida panther. With a wild population of between 30 and 50, the panther is one of the rarest species in the region. However, it's the reptiles that steal the show, with 50 different species in the park.
