This car is rare in Corvette circles as hardly anone knew about it till it was too late. it is a special racing package known as the L-88. Only a few were sold to the public, so that the sports car would qualify to compete in races. comply to racing rules and qualify as a racecar.
The L-88 has a 427 big–block V8 engine that is far more powerful than its listed power rating of 435 horsepower.
Chevy's plan was to sell as few of these cars as possible to the general public. A handful of dealers were used to cull a select group of potential buyers. So overall, a very limited number of people were aware of this car’s uniqueness when it hit market.
….The $3.2 million hammer price from Mecum doubles the previous record of $1.6 million for a Corvette at auction, set by Barrett-Jackson in 2008 with the Pininfarina-built, one-off "Rondine" coupe.
