Leroy Fick, a $2 million dollar lottery winner from last year is apparently eligible and receiving food stamps due to a loophole in the system. Many state officials have been trying to fix this loophole for some time now. Fick himself told a reporter from local news station TV5 “If you’re going to …try to make me feel bad, you’re not going to do it.

Attorney John Wilson said that Leroy Fick, who lives close to the city of Saginaw, took a large sum of money when he won the lottery last June, bought a house, and a used 2008 Audi, then invested the rest of the money. Fick is eligible for food stamps because the income he receives from investing the money is far less than $5,000 a year the rules for food assistance, Wilson said. He also added that “There is no based testing for it; it is all based on income.”

A state of human services spokeswoman, Gisgie Davila Gendreau, said: “We are actively seeking a change to the food stamp assistance policy, which is a federal policy, to ensure that those who are truly needy qualify.”
