The hopes to bring the Olympics to South Africa for the first time have been changed, according to South Africa’s Olympic committee president. The bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics has been put off, with the government of South Africa stating it’s” not the right time for the country.” After successfully hosting the World Cup, the thought that they would host the Summer Olympics came to the spotlight, but no Olympic bid has ever been made without government backing.

Gideon Sam, Africa’s Olympic committee president, told The Associated Press that the committee would not bid if the government did not give the ok. "We always said we would be guided by the government. It is important to be guided by the people with the resources.” There are hopes that South Africa will make a bid for the Summer Olympics to be held in the city of Durban sometime in the future.
