Audi is looking into building some of its compact car models in India, The Economic Times reports.
While the luxury automaker currently assembles cars in India, it is assessing whether completely manufacturing those units would be more profitable. The models under consideration for the shift are the compact Audi A3 and the Audi Q3, which is a compact SUV.
Audi has not yet launched either of the models. The determining factor on the feasibility of manufacturing in India is based on the number of cars Audi projects would be sold in the country. The current sales level does not justify the move.
It is a situation that is being monitored by Audi’s management team in India. A decison is expected within six to 12 months.
One of the three people close to company on condition of anonymity said, "A stand-alone manufacturing of an Audi car at the current low volumes is highly unviable. The only viable option is to share platforms with the Group's other vehicles.
