What does singer and songwriter Billy Joel have in common with Elton John and New York City-based sports teams that play their home games at Madison Squre Garden?
Well, like those sports teams and fellow pianist, singer, and songwriter Elton John, Billy Joel has a banner that hangs in the rafters of Madison Square Garden. John's banner honors Elton for playing more concerts (62) than any other performer at MSG. Joel's banner reads: "The longest run of a single artist," commemorating his 12 consecutive performances he played there in 2006.
Billy Joel has committed to playing every month at Madison Square Garden, beginning in January 2014. It appears to be a natural progression of his existing relationship with the city and reaffirms his own "New York State of Mind."
And, if all goes well, by May 2015 another banner should go up the rafters at MSG for Billy, as he would become the new holder of the highest number of shows played at the venerable multi-purpose venue.
There is speculation raised by the story in Bloomberg Businessweek whether any performer could pack in the crowds month after month ... even the "Piano Man." But ...
....Then again, his 2002 Broadway show Movin’ Out enjoyed a successful three-year run, and he all but stole the show from Paul McCartney and the Who at the 12-12-12 Sandy Relief concert held, appropriately, at the Garden.
