EBay Scores Big Win on Black Friday - Amazon Does Well on Thanksgiving

Online auction titan eBay ruled the morning hours on Black Friday, with sales jumping 35% compared to the same day last year, USA Today reports, citing data from ChannelAdvisor.

EBay beat out rival Amazon, which saw a 25% year-over-year rise in sales on Black Friday morning. However, Amazon surpassed eBay on Thanksgiving Day.

ChannelAdvisor tracks sales only by third-party vendors on Amazon, not by Amazon itself. However, investors consider the numbers an important harbinger of how ecommerce sites will perform during the Christmas shopping season.

EBay’s strong Black Friday performance was credited to shoppers flocking there to find popular gifts that had sold out elsewhere, such as Xbox and PlayStation game systems.

…Major retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy had Black Friday deals on the latest gaming consoles from Microsoft and Sony, but supplies were low and the items sold out quickly. That left many shoppers resorting to eBay, where such items are often re-sold at higher prices by people who have already bought them.

"EBay is the sales channel of scarcity," said Scot Wingo, CEO of ChannelAdvisor. "While some retailers had door-buster deals on Xbox One and PS4 consoles, eBay is one of the best places to get one now."
