The decision to keep their baby’s gender a secret has left a Toronto, Canadian couple, Kathy Witterick, 38, and David Stocker, 39, targets of strong reactions by both the media and the public.
Baby Storm, now four months old, had a birth announcement that didn’t announce gender, but rather a decision to let the child live without social gender pressures. This statement by the parents has created a stir, had the couple fielding calls, and caused quite a bit of controversy, calling into questioning their parenting skills. One skeptic said, “Wow, a good way to ruin your kid's life. Gender has nothing to do with sexuality. I think the parents are going to the extreme here […] What’s the hidden agenda here? A reality show? A book? Movie?" While others commended the parents, "Bravo to these parents for bravely taking on the gender-biased world that labels children with stereotypes and gendered assumptions before they are even born!"
Either way, the couple has decided that they are no longer talking to the media, so that they may put their energy into their new baby and their other children. They did release this statement, in response to the heated discussions regarding their decision, "Isn't defensiveness sometimes a first sign of learning or changing behavior, so even the 'rabid' responses may have a place in making the world a more thoughtful place."
