The Republic of Mauritius is a premium destination for those seeking a vacation getaway that is off that proverbial beaten path. It is an island in the Indian Ocean that is east of Madagascar and southeast of the Seychelles.

Located 1,200 miles off the southeastern coast of continental Africa, Mauritius is known for its idyllic beaches, subtropical climate and diverse cultural makeup. It is an eclectic enclave for lovers of water sports, deep-sea fishing nature, yacht charters, and, well, luxury on the slow side.

In the northern section, Grand Bay is known for its nightlife and the La Cuvette beach. It also is most popular amongst tourists. On the east, the Ile aux Cerfs also has beautiful beaches, a golf course, and a busy marina that accommodates all sizes of ships. Flic en Flec, which is on the western side of the island, has the most hotels and restaurants suitable for all budgets.

Upscale lodging options in Mauritius include the Sofitel, the Hilton, the Meridien, and the Oberoi.
