In a report filed by the AFT, a stone temple in Guatemala, in the city of Tikal, has been damaged due to vandalism caused by folks that attended the festivities that occurred earlier this month.
More than 7,000 people visited the site last Friday, December 21, 2012, as Mayan priests held ceremonies there that day.
“Sadly, many tourists climbed Temple II and caused damage,” said Osvaldo Gomez, a technical adviser at the site told AFP. It is forbidden to climb the temples. The nature of the damage was not described, but Gomez said it’s ”irreparable.”
