Gizmodo reports that the CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, is retiring within the next year, or as soon as the company’s next chief exec is in place.
Ballmer is the third member of the company’s executive-management team to depart, following Steven Sinofsky and Don Mattrick. The former was formerly the CEO of Windows, and the latter, Mattrik, helmed the Xbox division.
It is a changing of the guard for the high-tech giant, as it is shifting to a new role as a devices and services seller from a software manufacturer. The parting is on amicable terms, according to the official letter of resignation, which was sent out as an internal email to company staffers.
According to the press release, Microsoft is seeking a new CEO that will remain in place long-term as it revises its business model.
A press release can be found on the Microsoft News Center site.
