Is this an example of extreme reverse psychology, or a sincere gesture from a grateful company spared a potentially comprising situation?

Either way, the high-tech company actually thanked a hacker instead of filing an arrest report per this report from Forbes.  

Over the weekend, a report came in that a hacker claimed to deploy a circumvention method and discovered a way to “jailbreak” a Windows RT device so that it would run non-Windows Store apps on a Windows RT device.
