The belief that Neanderthals and modern man existed at the same time has been called in to question by a new methodology being used to determining the age of bones.

The new procedure, which ages bones more accurately, suggests that bones found in Spain, once determined to be 30,000 to 35,000 years old, could instead be more than 50,000 years old.  The difference of up to 20,000 years alters the assertion made earlier that Neanderthals and man coexisted, reports Discovery News.

These new findings hint that modern humans and Neanderthals did not coexist for millennia as before thought, and did not live side-by-side.
