Oprah’s Effect on Small Business

Oprah Winfrey, the queen of daytime TV, has stepped down from reign and this has some worried that small businesses will feel the effect. Oprah’s “favorite things” has been a business driver for small businesses for years, and has driven small mom and pop shops to million dollar status overnight. MarieBelle, a sweets company in New York that was hit hard by the effects of 9/11, went from struggling business to grossing $600,000. Good Karmal, based in Montana, who was mentioned on Oprah’s show in 2002 is now approaching a million dollar status and has seen business growth every year since its being chosen as a “favorite thing”.

With these increases in marketing for small businesses around the nation, will Oprah still be able to swing consumerism her way now that she has stepped down from the spotlight? Believers say yes, and that “Oprah has never lost sight of her audience, never." Though her show has gone off the air, O Magazine will still be promoting Oprah’s “favorite things” and helping small businesses grow.
