A businessman from Barcelona donated a 12-piece collection of medieval and Renaissance works to the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, on Tuesday, reports Reuters.
The paintings and sculptures from the collection will join the works of other prominent Spanish artists, such as El Greco, Velazquez, and Goya. With Spain’s economy mired in a crisis, which has forced numerous spending cuts, the timing of the donation could not have come at a better time, according to government officials.
"These aren't times of lavish state spending, so this donation is generous and tremendously timely," said Jose Pedro Perez Llorca, president of the Prado's board of trustees.
