Wal-Mart: How big is big?

Wal-Mart has been named Fortune magazine’s number 1 on the top 500 of the largest companies in America. The company was chosen based on revenues, which are the total earnings the company made “before subtracting out expenses”. It’s hard to imagine how big is “big” when it comes to companies, so broke it down into understandable terms.

According to Fortune, Wal-Mart “sold $421,849,000,000 worth of stuff last year”, breaking this down into understandable terms is easiest if done by looking at a large purchase, like a house. If Wal-Mart sold new houses, at an average price of $268,900 per home, then the retail giant would have sold 1.59 million homes last year. That’s a lot of real estate. Another attribute of what makes Wal-Mart “big” is, if we considered Wal-Mart as its own country, the retail space it takes up is 952,203,837 square feet-which is about one and a half times the size of Manhattan. That does not include parking lots, distribution hubs or corporate offices. That’s big business.
