Range hoods: How to balance form against function

That new range hood? Gorgeous. But will it clear the air?

Does your kitchen pass the salmon test? In other words, if you saute fish on your stove Monday night, can you still detect a whiff of it Wednesday? Alas, the answer is yes for too many people, even those who've spent big bucks for an eye-popping but ultimately less than effective range hood when they remodeled their kitchen. "For some, form beats function," when selecting ventilation systems during a kitchen makeover, said Jennifer Gilmer of Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen and Bath in Chevy Chase, Md. "And that's a big mistake."
