Perfect Picnic Food From Feng Sushi

August 15, 2011

Eating al fresco is an exotic activity in the UK, perhaps because winter keeps us cooped up inside for most of the year or possibly due to the risk of rain/snow/hail from our frustratingly fickle climate - there?s always a element of risk and danger in forward planning plein? air excursions. In fact the very notion of picnicking seems absurd to me: sitting on damp grass eating limp jam sandwiches all the while terrorised by angry wasps. No thanks. Of course that a very English interpretation of what is believed to be a French tradition ( check out Manet?s ?dejeuner sur l?herbe?. Not a scotch egg or flying ant in sight.) , and so when asked to sample ?Feng Sushi?s? new take away hamper I was hopeful - could this be the grown up solution I?ve been looking for?. I needn?t have worried. Inside my gorgeously ribboned box lay beautiful slivers of fresh salmon sashmi, neat little rows of cucumber and avocado sushi, crab salad and soba noodles, pesto tuna nigri and squares of spicy mackerel - all which my party of friends and I rounded off with a glass of champagne - perfect. Of course it makes perfect sense to start offering this box of delights during the summer months - Japanese cuisine is the prettiest finger food around and due to being naturally light and healthy you come away feeling full rather than bloated (plus it turns out the insects aren?t partial to raw fish - more fool them). Of course Feng sushi do provide a desert in the form of traditional mochi ( chocolate of course) which nicely marks a full stop to a delicious afternoon spent snacking. We collected our parcel from their smart Borough market branch then drove it down Battersea park to create an eastern afternoon parked up by the Pagoda. The sun came out, the birds were singing and all was well with the world. My advice this summer ? when it comes to a picnic in the park forget the mighty white and pick up a chopstick, far more enjoyable!
