Utility crews from Arizona continued working 16-hour shifts Tuesday to restore power to thousands of residents of Long Island, N.Y., whose homes are still cold and dark two weeks after Hurricane Sandy.
Most of the 8.5 million people who lost power have had service restored, many within a few days after the storm. But Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service Co. employees, along with thousands of other workers from outside the region, continue to rebuild connections in the hardest-hit areas of Long Island. There, storm-swollen seas filled basements and toppled trees, complicating repair efforts.
