Federal officials urged to help seniors avoid scams

Federal officials should continue working with local governments and others to educate seniors on how to avoid financial scams, experts testified at a recent Senate hearing. "From the opportunistic thief working as a home-care aide to the shady telemarketer who befriends a lonely senior on the phone to take advantage of him through a sweepstakes scam, the stories this committee has heard are alarming," said Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
