Unexpected reactor shutdowns at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station were a frequent multimillion-dollar problem a decade ago, but when Unit 2 went dark in October, it was on a long, record-breaking run.
The reactor 50 miles west of downtown Phoenix recorded the best performance in plant history. It generated electricity for a record 518 consecutive days before going offline for scheduled maintenance and refueling. The last record, 515 days, had been in place for 13 years.
