200 Pounds of Rice for Lunch

January 18, 2013

We're used to reading about campaigns to make school lunches healthier. Well, check out this cute video from Maggie Doyne's Kopila Valley School in Nepal. Ever seen kids so focused on a nutritious lunch, enjoying every bite? (And it's amazing how such young students can make so little mess!) "School lunch is my absolute favorite part of the day," Doyne says on her blog. "I love being the rice server, because it just never ceases to amaze me just how much some of these kids eat! I also love how they get so excited when they get greens for lunch or something special, like yogurt or a lemon or some pickle! It's the littlest things that make them so happy." Doyne says they serve more than 200 pounds of rice a day, which accounts for half of the school's budget, but she's happy to provide a nutritious, filling lunch. "The meals we serve keep our kids healthy and happy and nourished and off the streets begging for food," she explains. "For many of our students, our school lunch is their only real meal of the day."
