My love for Mr. de la Renta grows by each of his gracious actions. In a bold and generous move, the Master of Beauty has invited fallen designer John Galliano to spend time at his design studio for three weeks.
?Everyone in life deserves a second chance,? he pointed out. A talent such as Galliano's certainly does, as well. Two years ago, his drunken rants broke the world?s heart, mine included. Though I can't help but wonder if our current demands on designers contributed to his breakdown. The pressure on designers to perform like circus clowns is higher than ever. They?re now expected to churn out a whopping six collections a year, and they?re also to be active on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Weibo. Gone are the days when they could remain holed up in their studios, immersed in creativity and inaccessible to the public.
While I know my industry has contributed to these outcomes, I can't help but wonder if the paths of Lee McQueen, Christophe Decarnin, and John Galliano would have ended differently had they been left alone to do what they're meant to do: design beautiful things.
We could all take a lesson from Oscar de la Renta, a true designer?s designer.
